I'm getting some email where the spaces are stripped from the text, making it hard to read. The emails render just fine using Mac Mail and oddly, the one email I'm looking at appears to be just fine after a bit and only strips "character<space>" spaces and not "punctuation<space>" spaces.

Not sure if I understand this correctly. What I understand is that
"Hello Peter" is rendered as "HelloPeter", "Hello, Peter" is rendered
as "Hello, Peter". I cannot think of any filters in Alpine that would strip spaces while displaying (unless you have set display-filters and one of them does this)

If the message has a text/plain and a text/html part, does the problem go away if you toggle between these parts? If so, this might be a problem from origin, and the fact that the issue you report is gone in Mac Mail, might be due to Alpine and Mac Mail displaying different parts.

If you can share a sample message, we could take a look at it to see if the problem repeats, or how to work around it.
