Totally irrelevant to the main discussion, but in this case, it seems like it'd 
probably be a good idea to run screen on your work machine...
then, if you get disconnected, after reconnecting, you can do
screen -R 
and your various apps will still be running. (i.e. you can do multiple virtual 
windows with screen -- not actual separate display windows, but you just switch 
from 1 to 2 for example and it shows the other content)
