The messages imply the server side shut things down, which "broke the pipe" and filtered back to the clients as bad news (there was nowhere to shove their data). One scenerio would be running out of tape (or getting a tape error) while doing a direct to tape backup. The server would shut down its side in that case and let the client fend for itself.
