Just a cautionary note...

Self-builds may cause problems for some installations.  The default install
will be /usr/local, including shared libs.  Existing file installations will
likely be in /usr/lib.  Upon using the new /usr/local/bin/file, there can be
failures do to out-of-revision magic formats and file will not run.

The key is to run ldconfig with /usr/local/lib in the ld.so.conf file, or as
desired.
