This has been a busy news week filled with advances and set-backs for the GLBT community.
First there was the NY same-sex marriage decision where the very courageous Judge Doris Ling-Cohan ruled that gays and lesbians have a constitutional right to marry based on the equal protection right afforded in the NY State Constitution - very similar to the New Jersey State Constitution. But if you did a google news search for "gay marriage" just as that story was hitting the wires, you would have also seen that the prosecutor in New Paltz New York was reinstating criminal charges against Jason West, the mayor there who performed a number of same-sex marriages in that city last year. And you'd also have seen that certain members of Congress have reactivated their effort to amend the United States Constitution to define marriage as "only between a man and a woman." The NYS ruling is already being appealed by the City of New York where the mayor there at once says he's personally not opposed to same-sex marriage but at the same time instructs his Corporation Counsel to proceed with appealing the judges decision.
Go figure.
There's some exciting and interesting events this weekend and coming up over the next week. I'd like to urge everyone to take a couple of hours and attend one of the last three performances of "The Laramie Project" right here in neighboring Ocean Grove. NENA Productions is not afraid to put on controversial plays such as "Corpus Christi," "The Normal Heart" and now "The Laramie Project." As a community we MUST support those businesses, organizations and institutions that support us.... NENA Productions is one such group.
On a lighter note, Monmouth University is putting on "Cabaret" for the next couple of weeks; Paradise is holding a Valentine's Dance on Saturday night; Crusiin' launches their Pool League this Sunday; and the Crane House offers a night of Romance and Comedy through some very interesting film choices.
