The Truth of this sad matter, started when President John Fitzgerald
Kennedy pushed to deinstitutionalized the mentally handicapped. THis
opened the doors for moderately functionate individuals to be
released into communities.
Shortly after Marlboro State Phyciatric Hospital began disburseing
large numbers of these individuals into the Asbury Park, Ocean Grove,
Freehold and Long Branch areas. Mostly due because large houses
where bought and converted to rooming homes. State Health Department
made it real easy to run medical rooming homes and issued licenses
rather easily. The only real qualifying mechanism to own and operate
these homes was to supply 3 meals a day, a snack and access to
medical professionals.
It was a big business in Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Long Branch for
many years. With the Long BRanch redevelopment plans and the use of
eminent domain most of this homes are gone and many of these people
are no longer in Long BRanch.
