Werner and others who believe preservation will lead to tourism dollars are
absolutely correct. The big question and debate that I see arising in
Asbury Park is whether or not the city wants to become strictly a
residential town or a tourist attraction again. Those who say it can never
again be a tourist attraction are simply wrong. Just look at how much press
Asbury Park gets around the world whenever something like Springsteen and
the Today Show come to town.

Just the other day there were cars with license plates as far away as
Minnesota and Canada - people who traveled just to see Bruce Springsteen
play at the Paramount. This town has always remained a tourist attraction
but the town has refused to build upon its identity. Losing structures
like the Casino will only further kill the tourism aspect.

Look at towns like Belmar. They tried to overwhelming change the town from
the image of a "party town" to a "family friendly town". They jumped at
the chance to buy properties, which were businesses like pizza places and
arcades, and change them to residential areas. The end result is that in
just a few years the Belmar Main Street area is dying. Tons of storefronts
are vacant and the people who bought many of the residential properties do
not live there year long as the town hoped but come down only for a few
weekends.

What I'm trying to say is that Asbury Park is known throughout the world as
a beach town and for music. Few towns ever get recognized like that. Why
anyone would want to give all of that up is beyond me. Asbury Park should
move back towards being a grand resort instead of a residential post.
That's where the JOBS and the REVENUE (from tourist dollars) will be. And
that's what will not only save the city but allow it to thrive again.
