OCEAN GROVE — A Civil War re-enactment and Veterans Day ceremony scheduled to
be
held here next month have been canceled because of a campfire dispute between
the re-
enactors and the local fire prevention bureau.

Bopard members of the 2nd New Jersey Brigade, a sponsor of the event, voted
Tuesday
night to cancel the Nov. 4 and 5 battle re-enactment on the beach and Veterans
Day
memorial ceremony in Ocean Grove, said Charles Harris, 55, of Neptune, an
alternate
board member.

The Ocean Grove Bureau of Fire Prevention sent the group guidelines for the
encampment,
and it said the fire official would have the right to order open fires
extinguished to correct
hazardous conditions, protect public safety or for other good
cause.

"These restrictions were so stifling that we could not agree to them,'' Harris
said. "We
practice good safety procedures.''

Harris said with those restrictions, the fire official could shut down the
campfires for any
reason, and some of the re-enactors camp out and use the fires for cooking and
warmth.

Several hundred Civil War re-enactors from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
and
Maryland were expected to attend.

The fire official could not immediately be reached for comment.
