Official's ex charges him with harassment

HOWELL The ex-girlfriend of outgoing Deputy Mayor Peter Tobasco
filed a harassment charge against him Dec. 12.
Tobasco responded to the charge Thursday, saying it is an attempt to
mar his reputation and the matter is nothing more than a "domestic
squabble."
The ex-girlfriend, Karre Savoca, 39, of Howell, said in police papers
that Tobasco, 48, has been constantly harassing her for several
months, calling her at all hours and showing up at her house
uninvited.
She alleges that on the morning of Dec. 12, he left a message on her
answering machine stating he wished harm on her and her family for
what she was putting him through.
The papers also say Tobasco called her while she was at police
headquarters saying he had already called the chief, that "she won't
get away with this," and that he has connections in town.
Tobasco admitted he left "nasty" messages for her but said it was out
of character. But, he said he was responding to her "level of
viciousness and maliciousness" and her "erratic and unstable
behavior" in repeatedly breaking up with and coming back to him.
He added he could have filed harassment charges against her.
Savoca also obtained a temporary restraining order. No criminal
charges were filed.
"It'll come out that I'll be vindicated," Tobasco said.
Savoca said only, "The court will make the final decision."
Incoming Councilman Robert Walsh, who ran against Tobasco in the last
election, posted Tobasco's $500 bail. Tobasco lost in that election,
and his term ends Dec. 31.
A court date on the harassment charge has not been set. A hearing for
a permanent restraining order is scheduled for Jan. 5 in Superior
Court.
