You miss the point. 

It's called mentoring-  knowing where you're kid might be - having a 
role model - one who might talk to them DURING a rec program who can 
help them AFTER that day or 5 years later. You can also make a kid 
nuts in a sports program that's too intense.

It's called life after sports. 
Life before sports and during sports is called education.

Some schools simply push great athletes through the ps schools. Once 
done - if they don't find a college to baby them - they have nothing 
and wind up back where they started, often with the ones who had 
nothing to begin with. Completely lost.
