State issues subpoenas for Newark land purchase Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 01/17/07 ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEWARK The state Attorney General's office wants more details about how state transportation money was used to buy land in downtown Newark for a new NHL hockey arena under construction. The Attorney General's office has issued subpoenas to the Newark Downtown Core Redevelopment Corp. about land purchased near the new Devils arena, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported in Wednesday's newspapers. William Crawley, who heads the redevelopment agency, told the newspaper he doesn't know why the state wants the records. A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office said Wednesday the office could not comment. Under former Mayor Sharpe James, Newark received a $30 million grant from the state transportation department to improve roads around the arena. In question is why the city used $3.45 million to purchase a parcel of land, most of which is being used for the arena footprint and not for street widening, the newspaper reported. The $375 million arena is expected to open in October for the 2007- 2008 season. The city has agreed to pay for $210 million, and the Devils will pay for cost overruns. Last week, Prudential Financial Inc. announced a deal to pay $105 million for naming rights to the arena, called the Prudential Center. Yahoo!
