FREEHOLD — An Asbury Park man accused of fatally shooting a 60-year-old
grandfather
last month made a first appearance in court this afternoon.

Assistant Prosecutor Meghan Doyle informed 22-year-old Benjamin P. Fortune he
was
charged with murder, two weapons charges and possession of marijuana. The
Monmouth
County Prosecutor's previously identified Fortune as affiliated with the Bloods
street gang.

Fortune told Superior Court Judge Bette E. Uhrmacher he plans to retain a
private attorney.

Uhrmacher raised Fortune's bail from $1 million to $1.5 million because at the
time of the
Aug. 24 shooting, he was out on $50,000 bail on robbery charges in Asbury Park.

Authorities have said Fortune, who was arrested Friday night in Lakewood, fired
the
handgun that killed Charlton "Junie" Mack Jr. in his Comstock Street home.

Family members have said Mack heard gunshots and came downstairs to check on
his
young child when he was struck by a stray bullet traveling through a closed
window.

Kysheem A. Redding, 22, of Asbury Park, has also been charged with acting as an
accomplice in the murder. He has also been identified by police as a Bloods
gang
