Facade of Paramount Theatre to be restored by November Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 10/11/07
BY NANCY SHIELDS STAFF WRITER ASBURY PARK Larry Potter and his Landmark Studio crew out of Pittstown, Hunterdon County, hope to finish up the first phase of their restoration work on the Paramount Theatre facade by early November. Madison Marquette, the lead developer of the entertainment portion of the city's beachfront plan, brought Potter to Asbury Park to first work on the ornamental ceiling of the 1,500-seat theater in April. By June, Potter started on the south side of the 1929 building's facade where his workers are repairing and replacing stone blocks on the corners and restoring numerous decorative copper and terra cotta ornamentation including copper sailing ships and lanterns. "We're trying to get this (south) elevation and arcade in good shape," Potter said. The theater, part of the Convention Hall arena and arcade complex designed by architects Warren and Wetmore, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Potter is taking apart a 12-foot sailing ship with three masts on the south roof. Another 12-foot ship, which looks like it is slowing sinking, awaits him on the north side, and two smaller ships are on the theater's west side. "The copper is in very good shape," Potter said. "The way we're pulling it apart is very important on how it goes back together." Madison Marquette also has begun renovations of the Casino and power plant at the southern end of the boardwalk and is following a plan to renovate the boardwalk pavilions. The work at the Paramount includes reglazing the colorful terra cotta designs of sea horses and sea monsters, and restoring three types of lanterns sconces, barrel lamps and ship lamps. Yahoo!
