Official relents, lets Asbury Little League field work go on

Danny McKee and his Asbury Park Little League officials met Monday
night with the state Department of Education's fiscal monitor assigned
to the school district, and got the go-ahead to finish building their
new $225,000 Little League field, dugouts, lights and field house on
high school property.

The Board of Education last month halted the Little League's volunteer
efforts after the fiscal monitor — Mark Cowell, who has veto power
over the board — started working in the district's central offices and
said the league should switch the location of the field to the
run-down fields behind Asbury Park Intermediate School.

McKee and his Little League board revived the city's program in recent
years and, in the past year and a half, raised $200,000 and an
additional $25,000 commitment for a new league field. They were in
their homestretch to install the night lights and have the dugouts and
field house built before the upcoming spring season when they were
shut down.

Cowell said a new field at the intermediate school could benefit many
more city children and the school's students, instead of keeping it at
the high school, where the field is shared with the high school girls
softball team.

If they switched locations, the state would reimburse the league for
money spent so far to rehabilitate the baseball diamond and the new
bleachers, scoreboard, fencing and batting cage already up at the high
school site. Cowell said there would be no state money in the
immediate future without the league's contributions.
