Jack, you are speaking of 'context sensitve design' practices. Unfortunately that requieres thought and careful consideration of ALL the issues. Something that developers, architects, planners, etc have no time for in this day and age.
Well, some do - they are usually the most succesful. Some facts: - The entire Beachfront is a recognized historic resource on the National, State, County and Local levels. - ConHall is an official National and State historic site. - Casino is similarly recognized but was never registered. - 5th Avenue pavilion is specifically addressed in the Plan. - We are part of the NJ's 'Coastal Heritage Trail'. - The dominant architectural time frame represented is the 20s and 30s - Lets not forget the 1924 BCH is staying. Yes, some pavilions should be more sympathetic to the existing context in certain cases while others could be modern without negative impacts. For example the 1st Ave and Sunset Ave pavilions were originally twins in the Baux-Arts style of the ConHall ans Casino. It would add value to the project to replicate them and add to the context. Imagine the bridge btween the BCH and Sunset pavilion, and expanding on that to connect with the ConHall. Interconnect the Casino, 1st Ave Pav, and the Empress.... Now you have 2 mixed use complexes that anchor the Boardwalk and can be used year-round. But what do I know.........
