I'm a big believer in setting a small number of simple to measure and
clearly defined goals that when added up will deliver on a vision.
This is as applicable for a city as it is for a business. And few
places is it more needed than Asbury Park.

So here's one that I believe would be to everyone's benefit. I was
doing some research for a project on some small business websites and
came across a list of the 100 best cities to launch a business in.
That got me thinking "why not us?" We have lots of great loft-type
space that could be restored/converted into smaller office space. We
have a great downtown with fantastic restaurants and shops. We have
the ocean and boardwalk.

All we'd need is a start-up/small-business friendly political
environment and a real commitment by our leadership to make
attracting start-up businesses a real priority. I'm certainly not
saying there's not a desire to have them come today, just not a focus
and priority.

I would love for the city to set a benchmark goal to make this list
by 2010. That seems fast, but I really believe we're not that far
away and a serious commitment could get us there.

Any thoughts???
