Segregation is the issue that's firing me up lately.

Just lately? Firing up is pointless unless you can shed some light and
offer plausible solutions.

When you had the bully pulpit of a local column, did you shed any light?

In the years you wrote for triCityNews, I remember reading (after popping a
Zantac) each week lots of your firing up:
liberals against candy canes and commencement speakers; challenging the
patriotism of disabled veteran Max Cleland; red-baiting; Kwanzaa; spitting at
anyone who said "happy holidays"; Nostalgia Nazis; inflammatory comments
implying assassination threats; rantings against the Press and Pallone; that
sophomoric term "dummycrats"; and a host of other wedge issues.

And in that short-lived Coaster column: something about NOW and  feminists;
and something about Obama, because he's black....

Mostly, nothing about Asbury Park's real problems nor cool-headed
suggestions to solve them: Fire and heat, no light.

I'll admit I don't know how to solve the de facto segregation remaining in
parts of this city now.

But I remember being frustrated and pissed off years ago as I watched the
exploiters move in to fill the vacuum left by white flight: absentee and slum
landlords; poorly staffed and mismanaged urine-smelling homes for those
dumped here by the state or county; and corrupt officials.

Were you fired up then?

Fortunately, we've turned the corner on those problems: most of the
exploiters were driven out and replaced by more earnest types moving in. But
I
don't know if any of those new residents came from Howell.

Chill.
