ASBURY PARK The summer camp program at the Boys and Girls Club of Monmouth County ended Friday three weeks early because of club finances, executive director Douglas Eagles said.
"It usually runs until Aug. 31, but this is a way to ensure our financial viability to reopen in the fall," Eagles said. The early closing affected 83 children. Another 35 children in the daycare program will continue through the summer, he said. The club, at different times during the past two years, has reported that its fundraising had been slow during the recession. During the upcoming three-week period, an area troupe, the Bar-Top Bandits, will be giving children singing and dancing classes from 2 to 5 p.m. each Tuesday through Aug. 28, said Everett Brothers, a co-founder and creative producer of the group. A Labor Day weekend fundraiser in Asbury Park is planned to benefit the club, Eagles said. "We're managing through," he said. "We'll do whatever it takes to make it happen, so the kids have a safe place." ------------------------------------ Yahoo!
