mike,
yes, lets not sidetrack the thread...  like a key system was not a reference to functionality... just a reference to perception.  there are visionaries, pragmatists, and naysayers...  the visionaries are quick to adapt new technology to leap-frog the competition, pragmatists want to follow the leader, and naysayers hate change and avoid changing their business in any way...  there are very few visionaries and naysayers... you can't make money on either of these... you have to get to the pragmatist to make any money...  they like things to be very familiar, prooven, and llike to see others using the product.  if you come in with something new, they will say 'well, isn't that nice'...  and go purchase a key system... you won't get to first base with them...  they will not try something that new.  that is the visionaries job...

SwitchVox/Asterisk is an IP-PBX – The functionality is quite different from a Key System, especially from the end-user’s perspective.

If you have a customer that demands key system functionality, I’ve figured out a nice work around for using SwitchVox free edition to compete w/ a key systems SLA feature…

Subject: Re: [asterisk-biz] Switchvox Free Edition vs Thirdlane

speaking of the gui being a work in progress and from the banter about my switchvox post, I realized that I was so wrapped up in what I was doing, I neglected to 'watch the marketplace'. for new developments...

it seems that each offering has at least one, probably more, unique takes on solving the gui problem...

when reviewing the thirdlane website, which was substantially updated since I last checked, alex offers a unique product that allows a reseller entré into a market where there is no way to get into that market with a solution such as switchvox.

where switchvox is a nice clean and bullet proof install for a biz that wants a telephone system (like a key system) with an IVR they can work with themselves and pretty much not muck it up, Thirdlane offers a gui that the reseller can customize and brand as their own and, I suspect, add customized features tailored specifically to that application of asterisk and that would otherwise not be available in a gui form....

alex perhaps you can expand on this, as it is better to come right from the horse's mouth.

You are also very right that GUI is "work in progress" all the time.
My point is is one and only: GUI is collection of knowledge, skills and
experiences and lets not forget after sales service which are crucial to
successful deployments.

Windows XP has been released how many years ago ? Aren't they still coming out with fixes for it ? IMHO there is no perfect human being.
