This is the right place for ath5k related things, but since you are running a 
custom emdebian kernel nobody here knows what's going on with that kernel 
(addition patches, which compat-wireless version etc...). You could try to ask 
on the emdebian mailinglists or whatever they use. You can also try a 
wireless-testing kernel or a recent compat-wireless package and report back 
here. Also maybe nobody has the answer or time to look at this.
