I just got my SB2 two days ago and tried today connecting it to my DIY DAC (based on the DA1543N DAC, http://www.dddac.de), which works wonderfully with the digital coax output of my Creek CD player. however, SB2 seems to send 24bit data even if I play back 16bit data (like you state above) - is there any possibility (hardware-wise) to force it back to 16bit?
