Double Precision really doesn't do much in this application.
The numbers are fixed point, 16-bit for RedBook, sometimes 24 bit for
DVD-A.

The real trick is dithering the data back down to 16 bits.
Just truncating the data (either double, single floating,
or long integers) is clearly audible.
