I at least have no idea what the capabilities of the Xbox are - I'm
assuming it has a digital audio out you can plug into a DAC or digital
receiver?

If so, the difference is one of sound quality (almost certainly
inferior in the Xbox, since it wasn't engineered for this) and
convenience (don't you need a TV on to use it?  Can you search/scan
through music easily?).  The sound quality issue is rather subjective,
and also depends strongly on your system - if you have a jitter
resistant DAC the hype at least is that the source is not particularly
important.
