Since you are asking in the Audiophiles section: Digital sources
unfortunately sound very different to each other. The S/PDIF interface
unfortunately embeds timing information in the data stream. (Google for
"SPDIF jitter")

Depending on what quality sound reproduction you/he wants there are a
number of other issues that may arise as well (electrical noise, for
example). Not to mention ease of use, where the SB should win
hands-down.
