As I said in my post, I tried this both with and without removing the
DC component.  There is a tool in Audacity for doing so.  I only played
the DC normalized track over my real system just in case, although I
played both over my cheap computer speakers, and there was no audible
difference.  

Also, I think you're incorrect -  even if the amp doesn't remove DC,
which it probably does, how can a smallish DC offset do any damage to
speakers?
