First, a disclaimer that I am a Bel Canto dealer. I've spent considerable amounts of time with the DAC2, and I also spent about a month with a Benchmark DAC1 (evaluating whether or not to become a dealer for that, too). Both are certainly nice DACs. Here's what I consider the strengths and weaknesses of each (relative to each other): DAC1: Highly transparent and very detailed sound. Somewhat forward presentation. Can sound a little edgy in a highly analytical system. DAC2: Very smooth and warm sound. Nice refined midrange. Can sound a little mushy in a system that sounds lush. My personal preference is the DAC2...the DAC1 in my system was in fact a little edgy, but I've heard it sound quite nice in other systems.
