Its not really a case of "sorting" the S/N ratio.

Any DAC introduces an certain amount of noise. The preamp volume
control lowers the signal before the DAC (ie before the noise is
added), whereas an attenuator lowers the signal (and noise) after the
DAC.

The advantage of the DAC in the Transporter is that it introduces much
less noise in the first place! According to the Slim Devices website,
the THD figures are -93.5dB (0.002%) for the SB3, and an amazing -106dB
(0.00005%) for the Transporter.
