I believe it should be 5V only. The upgrade to a linear regulated isn't going to turn it into something radically different sounding though... Do you have any kind of power filtration you could plug the wall wart into? At least one member said filtration neutralized any benefit of the linear supply, so maybe it's worth a try first.
