You strike at the heart of the A-B testing issue, and it's an issue
that needs a big wooden stake, I reckon.  I once did a blind test where
I switched between two (good) DACs via the pre-amp remote - I and a
couple of other listeners couldn't hear the difference when we switched
quickly from one to the other.

However, if we listened to one DAC for about six tracks, then switched
to the other, we were all able to define the characters of the DACs
pretty consistently.  We had moved from analysing the differences to
getting into the music, and that was where the differences really
were.

So, if you're thoroughly enjoying your music while allowing 10dB of
digital attenuation, what's the problem?  The psychological benefits of
adjusting the volume from the remote could outweigh any sonic benefits
of a 100% level.  Just enjoy the music, I say :)
