I had a pair of similar Dynaudios a while back (same drivers I think). I used them with my 13W SET (!) It drove them, but not that happily - they always sounded a tad reticent to me, and I'm sure they should sound better. So while a DIY KT-88 might work, I might favour something with plenty of grunt, probably solid state rather than valve.
I think the passive attenuator is so you don't accidentally put full power through your system. While the SB volume is digital (and hence lossy), I don't think people have found too much wrong with it.
