They're more convenient.

Part of Clive's point is that there are rarely any errors reading from
a CD.  This is certainly true in my experience - my cheap CD-ROM drives
can read a new, unscratched disc at 4 or 5x with no errors, at least
most of the time.  Actually they can probably read faster than that
with no errors too, but I haven't checked.  That's zero errors in
5,000,000,000 bits.  A CD player reading at 1x should do just as well -
and even if there are a few wrong bits they will be totally inaudible.
