I believe this has been covered elsewhere. The theory is that many
"consumer-level" components convert analog to digital internally
whether you want them to or not because it's easier and cheaper to
process a signal (volume, tone, etc.) when it's digital rather than
analog.

So, when you connect your SB to your receiver with an analog cable, you
are potentially converting digital to analog on the SB, then analog to
digital at the preamp stage of the receiver and then digital to analog
again at the output stage.

That's a lot of converting, and maybe its munging things.
