"Digital" doesn't clip in the same way as analogue in the replay chain. The clipping is already on the CD/WAV so the replay volume has no effect on it. However, some DACS react badly to a 0dB signal (which should not be present on properly mastered material). So lowering the digital volume by a very small amount will avoid this problem...but the clipping is still there as I've explained.
