I have no idea what you consider a "normal musical selection" but I have compared high bitrate mp3's to FLAC and WAV and the difference is obvious. Sure, for casual listening in the background, the differences are minor. But it doesn't take much to hear the differences on a quality system. MP3 can sound really good but not as good as lossless. If you don't hear a difference then one of (or all of) a)your ears b)your equipment or c) the quality of the original recording are to blame. And that's OK. If you are happy with what you hear from MP3, great. Different strokes for different folks.
