Lots of moderate priced receivers do this to all signals.

And yes, adding a receiver's ADC and DAC can seriously degrade the 
signal quality. Especially with a good source like a Transporter or 
serious DAC.

As the cliche says: A chain is as weak as its weakest link.
For audiophiles, you can't skip any step.

And this is why a number of audiophiles want as few things in the chain 
as possible.
