Another thought...below is a picture of my setup (prior to getting a Transporter, but basically you get the idea...equipment racks sit between the speakers). During our listening test, there was someone sitting in front of the left rack managing the input switching. It's a possibility that having a person/body at that location was affecting the acoustics which impacted things like imaging, soundstaging, etc.
