Thanks for the link.

They seem to be attributing any differences to servo noise being passed
through the DAC.  So I guess that would make me right on the cause, but
wrong on the mechanism?

Interesting their comment about designers not being careful enough with
DAC voltage refs.  When I was messing around with video ADCs and DACs in
the dim and distant past, we were always very respectful of the
references!
