You can create a second iTunes library without problem!
On a Macintosh (and I guess it's quite the same on a PC), just press
and hold the "alt" key during the lauching of iTunes : the software
will then ask you if you want to use your current library (mp3 one in
your case), create a new one, or choose between severals (not your case
at this moment).
So, you just have to ask for a new iTunes library, to call it "loseless
library" for example, and to convert all the CDs you want, on your
internal or external hard disk, it doesn't matter.
Of course, if you want to reaccess to your previous mp3 music, just
relaunch iTunes pressing the alt key and so on...
