I don't know for sure, but from what I've seen Sean say on these
forums, I get the impression that the balanced and unbalanced output
stages of the TP are distinct. The DAC chip actually delivers a
balanced output. I don't know how the unbalanced feed is derived from
that. Perhaps someone who knows more about it will chip in.

I suppose you *could* define a passive attenuator as being a kind of
preamp, but most people are referring to some sort of active component
when they talk about preamps.

The bottom line is that if you decide to eliminate the preamp from the
signal path (which in my experience is definitely worth doing -
although others have found differently), then you need to get the gain
staging right so that you don't end up using a lot of digital
attenuation. Simple passive attenuation requires just four resistors
per channel for the balanced outputs, so it's not going to do much harm
to the signal.
