To me this is a storm in a tea-cup. I've just listened to Are You Experienced by Jimi Hendrix in 213k MP3. I noticed The Wind Cries Mary sounded really good. Comparing to the same tracks in FLAC (but a different master) the MP3 sounds noticeably better.
Now if a different master sounds better, despite being in MP3, it sort of puts the format war into perspective. And certainly it puts arguments about player performance into perspective too. I think we concentrate too much on the wrong things.
