To me, the obvious next step for SD is a digital home-theater-capable preamp.
Start with something like the TP, add the capability to decode and output multichannel audio formats plus a sub/LFE channel, maybe add an analogue volume control and analogue passthrough, and you have a great preamp/source combo that I think would sell very well.
