1) a new fridge? I know its not a very practical solution.... 2) The whirring sound is probably the hard drive, a lot of these DVR's never sleep the drive so they can quickly start recording. A TV stand with closed doors would block a lot of the noise, but you do have to be a bit careful about heat.
FWIW, I have similar complaints about my DVR, and also my LCD TV (which has three fans in it)....
