The reason behind "professional recording engineers" using lossless
audio, is for editing purposes.

If they use lossless, it means they can keep making changes and edits
to the tracks without ever losing any audio quality what so ever.

But, if they are daft enough to use lossy.... everytime they make
edits..... the quality will drop considerably.

Lossless converted to lossless = lossless (with 100% quality intact)
Lossy to lossy conversion = Lossy file (that has been compressed yet
again)

Because lossy to lossy = more compression, it causes the audio quality
to drop each time a lossy conversion is made to another lossy format.

Lossless has no compression what so ever. Making it impossible to lose
any quality
