Going back to Pat's original question, I'm going to have to answer yes. I've just been doing some critical listening against my main system (see below). Of course this is hardly a fair comparison, but...
It sounds more than acceptable - in fact very, very good. It only really slightly struggles on over-compressed heavy rock - and then only on some tracks (Cochise by Audioslave sounds great! - Can't comment on how it would handle Slayer or Slipknot...). It easily outperforms my friends B&O Beosound 1 (£1,000+) and is about 1/6th the size! Apart from the obvious differences against my main system (l/r "imaging", volume/power/dynamics, bass delivery below (say) 70Hz, ) I'm a happy audiofool. If my main system broke I could listen to the Boom for a long time while it was repaired - honestly. Vocals are handled well and it has foot-tappability. I'm really rather astonished. Directly comparing a Boom to a £20k rig is hardly typical - but let's say my £20k rig is nowhere near 100 times "better". On the other hand, I wouldn't swap it... The Boom doesn't seem to have any obvious "digital" glare or other jitter-related symptoms. You can listen for a long time. The top end is nice - not splashy at all. The bass (quality and level) is just mind-blowing for its size. But to me it's the crucial mid-range that really matters and it seems the designers have done a fine, fine job - hats off to them. Compared to my main system I'd conclude by saying that it can't quite communicate the power and the glory and the emotion of the music - it won't make you jump around the room and sing (Sean/Caleb - stop laughing!) - but it has a jolly good try! You need a lot more "watts" for that... :o) Watch out Meridian!
