I tried a Shek DAC, which cost a bit over £150 IIRC, and it certainly changed the sound; it soundstaged better and was smoother, but lacked a bit of punch. If that's the kind of change you want, it can help.
I'm now trying an Ack DAC, which seems very good. I got it used for £140 (retail in the UK is £750!), and it is a real step up from the SB3; in many ways it is better than my SB+.
