Ok, looks like need to revise my previous statement... The protocol specification does specify sample rates, but it depends on -which- version of the spec you are referencing, as it's been revised upwards in several steps! The GrandDaddy (IEC958) specified 48k as the max, while the latest version IEC60958rev3 allows up to 768k(!) and also allows for IEC61937 data streams, for multi channel, DSD and MP3.
