Compression is NOT the same as clipping! In fact, the whole point of
compression is to maximize loudness without clipping.

You can't "undo" clipping, but you could mitigate the harsh sound of
digital clipping after the fact using DSP.

But this isn't going to fix a Red Hot Chili Peppers album. There is no
way to undo compression. In fact, I often cite RHCP when trying to
explain compression - every bar of every song is just as loud as
everything else. You can't recover the dynamics, which have be
deliberately removed.

However, it's not distorted as it would be by clipping. Compression is
not just "cranking up the level" - it's performed by software
algorithms that dynamically adjust volume continuously in order to
maximize the envelope of the signal. They aim to minimize clipping - or
you might call it "soft clipping" depending on how you look at it.
