Compression is NOT the same as clipping! In fact, the whole point of compression is to maximize loudness without clipping.
You can't "undo" clipping, but you could mitigate the harsh sound of digital clipping after the fact using DSP. But this isn't going to fix a Red Hot Chili Peppers album. There is no way to undo compression. In fact, I often cite RHCP when trying to explain compression - every bar of every song is just as loud as everything else. You can't recover the dynamics, which have be deliberately removed. However, it's not distorted as it would be by clipping. Compression is not just "cranking up the level" - it's performed by software algorithms that dynamically adjust volume continuously in order to maximize the envelope of the signal. They aim to minimize clipping - or you might call it "soft clipping" depending on how you look at it. -- seanadams ------------------------------------------------------------------------ seanadams's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=57872 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
