No it isn't. Both compression and expansion are effects. I've used them
both extensively in the studio. To a limited extent you use one to
reverse the other... on an individual track. However, on a mix which
contains multiple different simultaneous compressions/expansions often
with frequency-limited bands (there really isn't enough space to
explain all of this here) + overall compression of some sort, there is
no way to accurately "undo" mix compression. Sure, you can slap a
dynamic "exciter" / dynamics processor across a mix and make it
"lively" again but this is a major FX treatment and has nothing to do
with the original mix master.

I'll try another way. The end results of track + sub-mix/group +master
Compression and expansion are non-linear and non-deterministic. So you
can't "undo them" accurately. All you can do is add another layer of FX
to the end result!


A dynamic range expander is a creative effect. It has nothing to do
with accurate reproduction. Slapping a DBX, BBE or whatever across a
mix can be fun, but...
