Modern equipment seems to be circa 2v rms or more* yes attenuators seems to be a very good idea in your case. If you been at mr rothwells site you can read his rant about "to much gain everywhere" or similar, it basically the truth. I use rothwell's in my ht setup they are reliable I had them for almost 5 years now no bad soldering or quality problems. If you have an old preamp you probably have that old problem of bad tracking between channels on low volume's Diy can be a good idea, you can solder the lpad inside the preamp if possible, older amps often have wires from from the connectors to the circuit board, modern stuff seem to have pcb mounted contacts in most cases. Or if one has very steady hands, inside the connectors of ones cables.
