Interesting. Prompted by this thread I just set up a playlist with smart replaygain active to level the volume playing field and did some back to back listening of Mothership tracks against the equivalent Remasters (1990 6 CD version) tracks. The differences are actually quite subtle. Very slightly more pronounced bass and reverb sound is slightly different on Mothership. However, I'm not sure I could DBT them...
Of course, without Replaygain, Mothership wins given the 5db boost (without any flat-top clipping or heavy compression by the way - the 1990 remasters were quite conservative in their levels so it was clearly quite easy for Page to up the power levels without resorting to volume-war hard limiting or agressive compression).
